This whole story sickens me. I really do feel sorry for the folks behind Chasing Ghosts, having Mattroid undermine their product–and then get ROASTED by their own fanbase for objecting to the treatment.

Come to think of it … I’ve been seeing a lot of this kind of thing. You know, where people praise the uploader of content more than they praise the creator of content.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an example of such behavior as depraved as what happened to Chasing Ghosts, though.

(As an aside, people wonder why I have a overwhelmingly negative knee-jerk reaction to the emote. If only more of them saw this kind of junk!

I’ve seen way too many people use that emote in the same way that Mattroid uses it to see it, in my mind, stand for anything other than “I’m being an obnoxious jackass and I’m loving every moment of it” haughtiness … )

Marketing is almost an entire “product” in-of-itself, isn’t it? Hold onto your screeners Jason, but be clever about building buzz. Get the “GET LAMP” buzz out in trickling early teaser trailers… turn that never-ending hunger for piracy into your advantage by buzzing the audiences… post torrents for your trailers as “pre-released trailers”… you can learn from the hungry-hoard and use their greed to benefit your projects if you are shrewd. // Now I need to go and see if I can find Chasing Ghosts on Netflix…

As I expected (or could have predicted), the leaked screener is now the dominant version, with the Showtime version (HD or otherwise) nowhere to be found. With what appears to be hundreds of downloads of the screener now out there, the suggestion by some of the people on thepiratebay and elsewhere that folks will, in the aggregate, download or go for the “real” version instead of acting like they’ve already seen it, is just silly. It is, ultimately, a very sad situation.

That’s downright slimy posting an unfinished version just before it was to be broadcast. I’ll be pretty damned careful with the accessible game I’m working on having read this. That’s for sure. I’ve been hoping Chasing Ghosts would come out on DVD as I can’t subscribe to Showtime. The arcade era has fascinated me for years and I’d love to hear a feature length documentary on it. However, I want to own a dvd copy that I can hear more than once with hopefully some nifty extras on it. If I knew absolutely that there wouldn’t be a dvd and there was no way of my legally hearing Chasing ghosts, I might very well eventually break down and try to snag what must be a mamoth download. I wouldn’t blame anybody for doing that to my own work in similar circumstances. Nothing pisses me off more than finding out about something I could have enjoyed but that I can no longer purchase or otherwise obtaine due to copyright laws. Short of that situation, however, I tend to sympathise with the authors and creators.

that screener getting leaked combined with the documentary being on showtime [not popular] is entirely the author’s own fault.
