I agree with the above post.

I bought 6 of the Venus DS3's with 6 750GB Seagate HD's. So far 3 Seagate drives have failed so I switched back to reliable Western Digital Drives.

The new Green 1TB WD drives are also ALOT cooler than the 750GB drives I was using with these enclosures.

There are also laptops with ESATA ports but if your laptop does not have them then you can buy an ESATA card for your laptop.

I have a Seagate hard drive which tends to do such a thing, frequently it goes "Brrr ..... whiiiizzzzz" and spins up, and then it goes "clack" a few moments later. It tends to crash or otherwise creep out almost any program using a net connection and the drive at the same time, such as FTP software, games etc.

I would use firewire enclosures, but the windows firewire implementation is so awful, that's a non-starter for you.

Your best bet is to just use SATA externally. The 'Venus' enclosures that NewEgg sells are the best by leaps and bounds:

The power supplies are terrific — the AC-adapter is small and plain 12v with a plain barrel adapter (no shitty mini-DIN plugs with arbitrary pinouts), and it converts the low-amperage 5v rail internally.

The cases are aluminum with plastic endcaps that provide for airflow around the whole middle of the case. There is a thin, large-diameter fan in the bottom of the case that is very quiet and does a great job of cooling. No tiny-whiny 40mm monster.
